Pyrography is an art that beginners can enjoy immediate results from and experienced burners can take to great levels. We have included a very brief introduction to pyrography below, but to gain a proper understanding of the art you really need to watch the training videos (separate videos for beginners and experts).
Step 1: Choose a design or find a picture that you feel is appropriate for your skill level, or perhaps a little above you, to give yourself a challenge.
Step 2: Choose the piece of timber or timber ornament that you want to burn on. With carbon paper, trace the image onto the timber, being careful to include all of the details necessary to complete your artwork.
Step 3: Heat up your pyrography iron until the wire is red hot and then turn it down just far enough to stop the wire from glowing. This will be at around the correct temperature for your work. To order equipment click here.
Step 4: Test your pyrography iron on a scrap piece of wood the same type that your work is going to be on. Be sure that the iron is at exactly the right temperature for the kind of burning you want.
Step 5: Outline your image with the pyrography machine, always pulling the iron parallel to the wire in order to get the best effect (see video).
Step 6: Shade the areas in your artwork, being careful to accurately represent the shading in the original image.
Step 7: Once you are satisfied that you are finished you can then apply a coat of sanding sealer to the surface of your artwork. This fills small cracks that are in the timber and prepares your work to accept the varnish and bring about a great finish.
Step 8: Lightly sand the surface of the picture with 320 grade sandpaper so as to smooth it down. Once done, clean the surface well with a rag, being careful to make sure all the dust is cleaned out of all indentations.
Step 9: Now you can apply two coats of lacquer, which will make your pyrography artwork look glossy and complete.
