Wood burning requires only a few basic pieces of equipment and as the main items are not readily available to the general public, they can be purchased from this web site.
This tool holds onto both ends of a piece of ni-chrome wire. It directs the appropriate amount of current through the wire so as to heat it to exactly the right temperature. The iron is a transformer using only 1.5 volts and so is very safe to use. It will hold a variety of different size wires needed for any desired effect. These wires are bent into particular shapes, as shown on the introduction video.
Timber:
Any type of light timber can be used for the art of pyrography. Timbers such as Pine, Willow and Poplar are all great. It is, however, imperative to use timber that is light so that there is enough contrast in colours. The best timber to begin with is sycamore because it is light in colour and has little grain to hinder good clean lines. Pine is also good, particularly for beginners because it is easy to use and inexpensive.
Other items:
There are a number of other items which can be used, most available at your local hardware store. Though not all of these items will be used in every project the training videos give you an idea of the things that you are likely to need. The videos go into a great deal of depth in how to use these items to achieve a great effect. To order the videos click here.
Warning:
It is important not to use manufactured timber products as the base for your pyrography. These include such timbers as multiple density fibre board (MDF) or chipboard. The reason is that these products contain glue and when you burn them you may be inhaling toxic fumes from the burning glue. Though you may find these fumes pleasant at first, you will find yourself with a mighty headache by the end of the day.
