Profile

The Beginning
Denise trained to become a qualified teacher and studied art as part of her training. Being naturally creative, when she was given the opportunity to write her name on a piece of wood with a small soldering iron, she was 'hooked'. It was at a Pyrography Information evening and that was all she needed to kickstart her career as a professional pyrographer. That was 16 years ago and Denise has excelled to the extent that she is now recognised as one of the best in her field.

Demand for Expertise
Because of Denise's skill and her achievements over the years, many people have asked to be taught by her. She has lectured on the topic many times, but because demand for her expertise outstripped her available time, she just was not able to keep up. So, to give everyone the opportunity to learn from her, Pyroz was formed and a comprehensive and easy to understand pyrography course was recorded on video. Demonstrations
She has demonstrated Pyrography at many places -
- at the first 'Pyromania Exhibition' in Melbourne, Victoria in 1996
- at the Canberra Show in 1997
- at the annual Woodworking Exhibition in Melbourne, 1998-2000
- at a number of other exhibitions
- Denise and her work has been featured on 'Better Homes & Gardens' (Australian prime time television show) in 1997 & 1998.

Largest Burning
Her largest work to date has been a joint effort with another pyrographer, of 3 metres by 2 metres, depicting the pioneering history of a small country town. Her largest number of works, was burning 20 wooden tables for a tourist café complex, depicting a wool theme on each table.

Art
Denise's main focus is any thing to do with Australiana themes, such as fauna, flora, farming, early housing, swagmen, stockmen, horses, the wool industry, transport etc…basically anything to do with the pioneering days of Australia. She also likes to burn portraits, stamps, old photographs and nautical themes.

She has woodburned many, many objects including tables, hutches, stool tops, wooden lamp stands, name plates and badges, murals, wall hangings, other furniture and wall plaques. Click here to see her gallery.

Denise's Tools
She started by using a Semco Craft Soldering iron, now she always uses the iron core transformer tool (T3/54). It has different wire nib sizes and heat settings. Click here to find out more about equipment. Click here to order pyrography tools.
